The Australian Standards for stair nosings are outlined in AS 1428.1-2009 Design for Access and Mobility, which provides guidelines for the design and installation of stairways and associated components to ensure accessibility and safety for all users, including people with disabilities.

The path of travel should have nosings on the treads with a minimum depth of 50mm and a maximum depth of 75mm contrasting anti-slip strip. The nosing strip must have a contrast of at least 30% to the floor finish. The nosing strip is allowed to be set back up to 15mm from the front of the nosing.

There are several different types of stair nosing available in Australia, including aluminium, rubber, PVC, and stainless steel. Each type has its own unique features and benefits, and the choice of material will depend on the specific requirements of the project.

When choosing a stair nosing for your project, it is important to consider factors such as the material of the stairway, the level of traffic, and the aesthetic requirements of the space. It is also important to ensure that the nosing meets the relevant Australian standards for safety and durability.

Yes, slip resistance is an important factor to consider when choosing stair nosings for commercial settings. The nosing should provide adequate traction to prevent slips and falls, even when the stairs are wet or slippery.
